INARF Q&A List Serve Question: Driving Tests for Direct Care Staff

Question:

Are any providers conducting annual driving tests for their direct care staff?

Responses:

  • No, we do not
  • We do annual Defensive Driving online training course, but not a physical test.
  • No
  • No, we do not, but I have seen a GEO locator used in vehicles that tracks location mileage and speed. They can be synced to a phone app with notifications.
  • We run annual driving records and do a passenger assistance technique training annually, but we do not do driving tests.
  • No, we evaluate DSPs as part of their initial hands-on training with a road test demonstration, and we only repeat this as remediation after an accident, ticket, or other offense.
  • We don’t, but we do require annual driver safety training and run a BMV records check annually.
  • Defensive driving training along with a “test drive” during new employee orientation. Annually- DSPs complete a defensive driving course on Relias.
  • Staff do an annual defensive driving class online, but do not complete a behind the wheel portion annually. We only do a behind the wheel portion when hired, and then retraining if there is an incident that occurs such as an accident or injury.
  • We complete competency checks for those associates that are responsible for driving wheelchair accessible vehicles.
