QUESTION: We have some Direct Support Professionals who only provide transportation for individuals. They bill for transportation services. Do these staff persons need to be trained on each consumer’s client specific information? They provide this service to many individuals but for only short periods of time so to keep them updated on training for each individual would be overwhelming. Does anyone else have this issue and how do you address it? Yes, the DSPs that are providing waiver transportation services need to be trained on each individual they are working with. Based on the DDRS policy manual regarding DSP requirements/training – “Prior to providing services to an Individual, all Direct Support Professional Staff will be trained to competency in the Individual specific interventions for each Individual they are working with, including but not limited to the individual’s: health and risk needs; behavioral supports; diet and nutrition needs; swallowing difficulties; medication administration needs; side effects for prescribed medications; mobility needs; means of communication and corresponding; and outcomes and strategies included in the Individualized Support Plan (ISP)" Yes, any staff who are responsible for supervision of any client at any time needs to be trained on their high risk plans and behavior plans at least. Particularly when in transit, driver should know who might have a behavior and how to respond. Who might have a seizure and how to respond, etc. If the transportation is billable under the waiver, the DSP training requirements must be met.
