QUESTION: We would like to know what other agencies’ experiences are with Medicaid Prior Authorization (PA) Services. Are they positive, negative? Are you seeing more denials or approvals, and how are the services being used in the waiver homes? Our agency has several individuals receiving Medicaid PA services. These services, for the most part, are adequate at best. One issue we continue to experience is PA providers expecting our Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to assist them when present or do the task the PA provider is expected to complete. Other areas of concern are scheduling of hours and/or changing dates and hours of service. At times, individuals have experienced the PA providers changing the dates and hours of the service without notifying the team, which causes undue stress for the individuals and a hardship for us regarding staffing needs.
