QUESTIONS: Would organizations be willing to share their policies relative to their closed circuit video and parents or non-employees wishing to view all or part of a segment? Do any providers have video surveillance in the common living areas, and if so would you be willing to share your policy in regards to the use of it? Unfortunately, INARF only received one response for these questions. If you have additional feedback, please email Heather Newman at heather@inarf.org and your response will be added to this post. We have had several conversations with parents wanting to put video surveillance in the homes and we have not approved doing this. Mainly the reasoning is because it makes it less of a ‘home’ environment and erodes the privacy of all those that live there. At one point (some time ago) we engaged in a conversation with BDDS about this and they were in agreement that this would violate personal privacy. Only once or twice have we had to say ‘if this is required by you then you need to look for other housing’. We have lots of other monitors for individuals with medical or behavioral concerns; i.e. a mat that sends a signal to the supervisor if they get up or out of bed, a buzzer if certain doors get opened…similar to what is used on electronic monitoring but it doesn’t go ‘off site’ but alerts the person on duty. We do have cameras outside of the homes. We can see who comes and goes and these get utilized when there is contention about staff hours.
