QUESTION: How do other organizations handle DSPs providing PAC/Respite services to a family member or friend? This is the only person they are serving. Do you make them a part-time employee or consider them an independent contractor and pay them as a 1099 worker? If we have a family member or friend that provides service to only a family member or friend, then they are still an employee and only assigned to that person. That way we can bill for the service and pay the family member or friend for providing the service. We hire them as a part-time employee to ensure they receive all of the necessary trainings for a DSP. We have some individuals where this is the case, and they are officially part-time employees of the agency. This is not the most comfortable arrangement, as we really have no control over them. We hire them as part-time or casual depending on the hours. This information is a compilation of suggestions, ideas, and opinions shared by INARF Members in response to the featured question.
