QUESTION: Do any agencies offer cash recruiting incentives such as a sign-on bonus, 1-year service bonus, or referral bonus? If so, could you share the details of your program, how long you have had the program in place, and how it has affected your 1st year turnover rates? Our organization offers employee referral incentive. Anytime an employee refers a candidate who is hired, will receive incentive dollars once that hire has been employed for 90 days. First referral = $50 | Second referral = $75 | Third and all subsequent referrals = $100 We have offered this incentive for the past 3 years. Most of our hires come from these referrals especially in the Indianapolis area, NW Indiana and Allen county. *** We have done referral bonuses and find that sometimes it does not attract the quality of staff that we are seeking. Sign On bonuses are a challenge – as so many people will come and attempt to get the job – just to get the sign on BONUS and then leave…..this is especially difficult when so many people are trying to stay compliant with unemployment rules. We have had the most luck with bonuses at the end of a probationary period. *** We offer a $150 bonus to employees that refer candidates and we hire them. The employee receives $50 on the day the referral start and the additional $100 if the referral stays through their first 90 days. The program has been in place for 5-8 years, maybe a few more. We promote it in our monthly newsletter as well as send out blast emails as reminders. I am not sure that it has much effect on our turnover rates. *** We had a sign on bonus and referral bonus program for several years but suspended them the end of last year due to budget problems. We have found the referral bonus to be quite successful at getting staff and those generally stay longer. The sign on bonus was $200 so did not seem to be effective at that level. We assume it would take more but are unable to do right now. *** We currently have staff referral bonuses. If an employee refers an external candidate and they are hired and remain on payroll 90 days, the employee that referred the candidate receives a $250 referral bonus. I have not seen a reduction in turnover numbers but our hiring has increased. *** We have recently experimented with a sign-on bonus for a nurse and director position. The sign-on bonus did not seem to garner more or better qualified applicants. We do offer our employees a $300 referral bonus that is very effective.
