Responses Posted for INARF List Serve Question: Holiday Time Off

Question:

How does your organization pay out holiday pay? Do the hours come from PTO hours or is there separate holiday pay? Additionally, if someone works less than 8 hours on average, do you pay for a full 8 hours or the average hours worked?

Responses:

  • Holidays are separate for us. They are given 4,6 or 8 hours based on status. If they work that day it is double time.
    • If they work 40/week and happen to work 3 hours they get paid double time and then get 5 holiday hours to get to 8 hours.
  • This is our holiday policy.  PTO is separate, and employees do not need to use their PTO on a holiday
    • The organization will grant paid holiday time off to all eligible employees immediately upon assignment to an eligible employment classification.
    • Matched Holiday Time
      • Employees may be eligible for Matched Holiday Time if they work on the actual holiday, as listed above. If requirements are met, The Arc Southwest Indiana will match up to 8 hours worked of Matched Holiday Time at the same rate as the employee’s regular wages.
      • Matched Holiday Time will only be for the Direct Support hours worked before midnight on the actual holiday, as listed above.
    • Observed Holiday Time
      • Observed holiday time is paid to employees with a status of benefited only. Employees who chose no benefits to receive the higher wage upon hire are not eligible for observed holiday time.
      • A recognized holiday that falls on a Saturday will be observed on the preceding Friday. A recognized holiday that falls on a Sunday will be observed on the following Monday.
    • To be eligible for observed holiday pay, employees must work the last regularly scheduled day immediately preceding and the first regularly scheduled day immediately following the holiday. A regularly scheduled day to be worked is determined by your immediate supervisor.
    • The only exception to holiday pay eligibility will be for those who are on approved paid time off or bereavement leave. If a recognized holiday falls during a benefited employee’s paid absence, holiday pay will be provided instead of the paid time off benefit that would otherwise have been applied.
  • We have 11 paid holidays which are separate from PTO.  We pay out the hours based on their status, anywhere from 4 hours (part-time status) up to 8 hours (full-time status). All employees working anywhere from 20-40 hours per week receive this pay whether they work the holiday or not.
  • Holiday pay is separate and in addition to PTO for full time employees. We have 8 paid Holidays per year. Holiday pay is based on your normal hours per week, and is prorated for those full time employees that are regularly scheduled between 30-9 hours per week. (30 is considered full time for us)
  • Our Holidays are paid separately from PTO.
    • We pay for 11 holidays for anyone scheduled 30 hours or more.  For those scheduled less than 40, the holiday hours paid are based upon their weekly scheduled hours divided by 5 days. Example: Someone working 30 hours would be paid 6 hours for a holiday.
  • Beginning last year, our agency provides holiday pay separate of PTO. All full time staff receive a full 8 hours pay. Part time staff receive holiday pay based on their average hours worked. Staff must work their last scheduled shift prior to the holiday and first scheduled shift after the holiday in order to receive the benefit
  • We combined PTO and Holidays several years ago as many of our employees do not celebrate traditional western holidays. They are paid for their normal work schedule, which can range from 6 to 12 hours.
  • Our holiday pay is separate and we prorate holiday pay based on hours worked
  • Holiday pay is separate from PTO, and is automatically paid to any qualifying employees for each of the holidays on our set list of holidays we observe.
    • The amount of holiday pay is determined by the employee's status:
      • Full-time (36+ hours/week) = 8 hours of holiday pay
      • Part-time (20-35.75 hours/week) = 4 hours of holiday pay
      • Part-time (Under 20 hours per week) = not eligible for holiday pay
  • We pay holidays to all full-time employees, it is not taken out of their PTO. Holiday pay is prorated for the hours worked and they must work the day prior and day after the holiday
  • Pays holiday pay and does not take it out of PTO.
    • Full time employees who do not work the holiday receive straight pay for the number of hours they are scheduled for that day.
    • Hourly employees are paid time and a half for any hours they work on that day
  • HOLIDAYS – not from PTO
  • Holiday Pay is 8 hours for full-time employees once eligible.
    • Given the people we serve needs, it may be necessary for you to work on an observed holiday. If you are asked to work on an observed holiday both full time and part time employees will receive time and a half pay for the holiday worked.  At any point you plan on working during a holiday it must be authorized at least one week in advanced by the Executive Director or Director of Services.  Not obtaining approval will be considered non-compliant.
