SUD has a tremendous negative impact on many life domains including employment. In our April Lunch and Learn, we will discuss the mechanism of SUD, understand why people living with disabilities may be at greater risk, and explore traditional and non-traditional methods of helping people with disabilities identify healthy coping skills to prevent and minimize SUD. Meet Lunch and Learns New Coordinator Paul Phares is a Senior Consultant based in Illinois. His areas of expertise include supported employment, mental health, and substance use disorders. Mr. Phares has over 20 years’ experience in community-based mental health and substance use disorder program implementation. Paul earned his master’s in counseling from Western Illinois University and has extensive experience in service design in several evidence-based practices such as Assertive Community Treatment, community-based care coordination, Targeted Case Management, Mental Health Courts, and Individual Placement and Support (IPS) supported employment. Paul has worked closely with courts, hospitals, law enforcement entities and state entities to develop policies, procedures, and implement programs for community mental health centers in Illinois and Iowa. In addition to his programmatic experience, Paul has over 10 years’ experience as a Certified IPS Fidelity Reviewer in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, and Washington. Paul has served as a member of several work groups/ task forces and previously served as the Board Chair for the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) Greater Mississippi Valley.
