QUESTION: Our organization is looking for a way to allow for employees under the age of 21 to drive for us. Our current broker does not allow for it. Would other members be willing to share information on how they have drivers under the age of 21? We haven’t had any issues covering employees that are under 21 who drive, our insurance company is Philadelphia. *** Drivers under the age of 21 have never been questioned for us, and we’ve had multiple brokers. As long as you are doing your due diligence with driving record checks and obtaining proof of valid driver’s license, I’m not sure what basis the broker has to limit your drivers. I would ultimately suggest looking for a new broker and/or a new carrier. Our current broker is Gibson Insurance, and our current carrier is Cincinnati (we’ve had Philadelphia in the past.) *** We used to have the same issue with drivers under 25. It was a real negotiation with our insurance company to get them to drop the age down to where we needed it as we were missing a good share of the market for employees. We got them to drop the age to 18 after much discussion and finally just letting them know that we would have to make arrangements with another broker if they couldn’t accomplish this. We have agreed to putting together a driver’s training program within our company to make sure our employees get trained properly. We are in the process of developing that. We are insured with Harleysville Insurance for Drivers - our broker is Campbell Group out of Michigan.
