QUESTION: Would any agency be willing to share their policies and procedures on staff’s children being at an individual’s home while receiving services and individuals visiting staff homes? Our agency’s Personal Code of Conduct states that allowing personal visitors to the site, such as family and/or friends, without supervisory approval is prohibited. *** These activities are not allowed if the staff is on duty. There may be special occasions (i.e. individual’s birthday party and individual requests staff and children are present) where this is allowed with proper supervisory approval from two different levels. If allowed, the employee would not be on duty at the time of the event. *** Our agency’s Supported Living Expectations states that individual may not go to staff’s home for any reason and staff may not bring friends, spouses, children or any other acquaintances to individual homes, even if the individual states that it is okay. *** Our agency does not allow staff’s children to be at an individual’s home, nor is an individual allowed to visit a staff’s home without proper approval. We began prohibiting this when there were incidents involving individuals being neglected by staff when their children were present or the individual was being coerced to go to staff’s home. *** Employees are prohibited from bringing their children to work. Children may visit the work site as long as the visits are infrequent, brief and planned in a fashion that limits disruption to the work place. While children are in the work place, they must be directly supervised by the host/parent at all times. If the frequency, length, or nature of the visits become problematic, the employee will be advised of the situation and will be expected to take corrective action. *** As part of our agency’s Standards of Conduct, staff may not have children at work with them, nor are they to have individuals served at their homes. *** We do not allow staff to bring their children or friends to an individual’s home or for staff to bring an individual to the staff’s home. Any exceptions must be approved in writing by the individual services director or an officer of the company. *** When our staff are on duty in an individual’s home they are expected to be interacting with and supporting the individual receiving services. The children of staff are not permitted to join them at their work place, whether it is an individual’s personal home or in a staff person’s office. No family members of staff should be coming to an individual’s home when the staff person is working. Any exceptions to this rule must be approved by management personnel. *** Our agency does not allow children, family, friends, etc. to be at the home of an individual receiving services without management approval. When approved, it must be evident that there is some benefit to the person being supported. *** Our agency does not allow any mingling of personal and professional lives of our employees. *** Our agency does not allow these activities, as the liabilities are too high for the individual and the agency. *** These activities are frowned upon when done without prior approval from management. We do not have a formal policy in place at this time. *** Our agency does not allow visitors or children at any of the service sites. There are HIPAA and liability issues associated when this is practiced.
