QUESTION: How do other providers ensure that their staff have safe vehicles to transport clients? We have been doing a vehicle inspection upon hire and then annually, but wonder if this is something that is necessary. CARF states that for all employees providing transportation to clients a safe vehicle is necessary (both organizational and personal vehicles). How have others met this requirement? For staff who take clients in their own personal vehicles. They are required to have their vehicle inspected quarterly. Our organization does not permit staff members to transport clients in their own personal vehicles. We require that clients always be transported in our agency vehicles. That way, we ensure adequate insurance and we control the safety of our vehicles. Employees must complete a pre-trip inspection on any vehicle used for company business. This pre-trip inspection covers items relevant to the safe operations of the vehicle.
