QUESTION: What type of training are providers utilizing for employees who drive agency vehicles and transport clients? All drivers will be trained in First Aid, CPR, and Seizure First Aid care. All drivers will attend a onetime Defensive Driving Transportation Safety training session that must be completed within their first month of hire. Drivers hired for a specific route will be trained for two (2) days on that route, ride one (1) days and drive one (1) day. Substitute drivers will be trained for two (2) days on each route, ride one (1) day, and drive one (1) day. Drivers on daily routes will attend meetings/trainings that will be held once a quarter, as a group, to continue training on emergency and safety procedures, vehicle maintenance, defensive driving, etc. All drivers training will reflect input from clients before implementation. This class is done by our transportation division and includes driver safety information, securing wheelchairs, using a lift and other related topics. It is a two-day training. Our Transportation Policy is trained during orientation. Additionally, we have begun to incorporate a defensive driving training in our new employee orientation. We have a safe driving course that employees can take, but generally we just review the rules of transporting customers in personal vehicles. Our office manager will review the agency vehicles driving rules in case employees must drive one of those. We require completion of an online general training on driving on our LMS system. That is followed up with a short classroom time with the driving trainer, and then in the van practice and testing. We offer remediation training for those who have an accident or cause damage in a company vehicle. Maintenance of a valid driver's license and proof of current insurance coverage is also required.
